Playoff contenders have a full plate for Thanksgiving matchups

This year’s slate of Thanksgiving Day games do not feature any marquee match ups, but each game has significant playoff implications. The holiday weekend could make or break Philadelphia’s and Dallas’ seasons. Green Bay is likely playoff bound no matter what, but they are in the middle of a rough patch and need a solid victory to get themselves back on track.

Here are our predictions for this year’s Thanksgiving Day games:

Philadelphia vs Detroit

The Eagles will enter their Thanksgiving Day matchup with the Lions tied for second in the division and one game back from first place. The way the NFC is shaping up, only one team from the east will get in. Philly will need every win they can get to keep pace with the Giants and a Cowboys team, which just got a huge boost from the return of Tony Romo. The Eagles have lost their last two contests and will continue to struggle as long as Sam Bradford remains on the sideline. As disappointing as Detroit has been this season, their offense is still dangerous. Philadelphia just gave up five touchdowns to Jameis Winston and suddenly revitalized Tampa Bay offense. Without their starting quarterback, another disappointing  loss is in Philly’s future.

Prediction: Detroit 24 Philadelphia 17

Carolina vs Dallas

The Panthers are the top team in the NFC, but they will face a tough test from a Dallas team which has found new life with the return of their starting quarterback. Dallas is a much more dangerous team when Tony Romo is under center. At 3-7, the Cowboys will essentially be playing for their season on Thursday afternoon. A loss would put them 2.5 games behind the Giants in the division and likely end their playoff hopes. Carolina is undefeated and coming off of three very impressive victories. As meaningful as this game is for Dallas, they simply do not have the firepower to compete with the Panthers.

Prediction: Carolina 35 Dallas 21

Chicago vs Green Bay

The Bears have an opportunity to play spoiler to the Packers hopes for a playoff bye in one of the NFL’s oldest rivalry matchups. Chicago’s playoff hopes are long gone, but Green Bay is tied for the division lead with Minnesota and one game behind Arizona for a playoff bye. The Packers have not been the same team since the 29-10 beating they took at the hands of Denver. After a three game losing streak, Green Bay picked up a win over Minnesota in week 11, but it was ugly. The Bears have a chance to pull off the upset, but only if Jay Cutler is at his best. Chicago has a below average defense and will struggle to slow down Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay offense.

Prediction: Green Bay 32 Chicago 17

Will Philadelphia’s playoff hopes come to an end on Thanksgiving? Can Tony Romo propel the Cowboys into the postseason after their 3-7 start? Feel free to leave a comment or find me on Twitter @Andrew_Morse4
