Maria Sharapova’s drug scandal results in conflict for the tennis star

World no. 7 professional Russian tennis player, Maria Sharapova, publicly announced the positive results of her drug test in the midst the 2016 Australian Open. Sharapova’s failed test for the drug meldonium, which apparently has performance-enhancing properties but is usually used for heart problems, is sparking controversy throughout the Tennis world.

The 28-year-old Russian is now facing threats of lengthy suspensions and serious reductions of brand building that took the tennis star years to develop. However, Sharapova may have been misinformed about the banishment of the drug, which was declared as a banned substance as of January 1. The tennis player has been taking meldonium for the past 10 years for abnormal electrocardiogram readings and some diabetes indicators.

Sharapova stated:

“It is very important for you to understand that, for 10 years, this medicine was not on Wada’s banned list and I had been legally taking that medicine for the past 10 years.”

Many idols and contributors throughout the Tennis Association have much to say about Sharapova’s situation. Andrew Castle, BBC tennis commentator, shared his opinion and described Sharapova’s failed drug test as “a hammer blow to the sport.” Jennifer Capriati explains her feelings as “extremely angry and disappointed.”

Serbian professional tennis player and currently ranked no. 1 in the world, Novak Djokovic, stated his thoughts in an interview with ESPN after much anticipation for his response to Sharapova:

“If she was caught to be positive on the doping for a certain substance, then there should be certain kind of consequences for that. But on the other side, we live a very busy life and there is a lot happening. I think at least what we can do is to have this double kind of confirmation of the change also from ATP side. Again, I’m trying to understand both sides.”

Sharapova’s failed drug test could be seen as an honest mistake, or a blown out of proportion drug scandal. Either way, the Russian tennis star and five Grand Slam title holder is facing heavy punishments.
