Konami denies ‘Metal Gear Solid’ creator’s departure
It was reported earlier in October that the creator of the “Metal Gear Solid” series, Hideo Kojima, had left Konami, but the gaming company is denying that this is true.
Kojima has worked at Konami for the past 29 years, so it came as a surprise to many that he decided to part ways with the company. His last day at the office was on Oct. 9, and afterwards a farewell ceremony took place in the developer’s honor at Kojima Productions. Around 100 guests attended to say their goodbyes, yet Konami still denies he has left and claims that Kojima is just “on vacation.”

“Currently, Kojima and the development team are finished developing Metal Gear Solid V and are taking a long time off from work,” said Konami.
If Kojima really has left the company, why are they making it sound as if he still works at Konami? The “Metal Gear Solid” series is one of Konami’s most popular franchises, and losing the creator of these games could cause some bad PR. Kojima’s non-compete clause expires in December, so Konami could be hiding his departure in the hopes that they can convince him to renew his contract with the company in the coming months.
Why would Kojima want to switch game developers, after spending almost three decades at Konami? Many believe Kojima is leaving because of Konami’s plan to make the shift to mobile gaming. In April, Hideki Hayakawa was appointed as the new president of Konami, and not long after, he announced his plan to “pursue mobile games aggressively.” Hayakawa wants mobile games to be the company’s “main platform,” but Kojima’s most popular titles are for consoles, and he has little experience developing smartphone apps.
For the time being, Kojima has stayed quiet about his departure, but more information will likely be made public when he is no longer under contract with Konami in December.
