Comcast may gain back ‘Worst Company’ title with new data caps
Comcast has come under fire for their plan to implement a 300GB data cap on their customers’ accounts across Arkansas, Louisiana, Tennessee, and Virginia. Starting Dec. 1, customers will be automatically charged if they go over their monthly limit.
“While we believe that 300GB is more than enough to meet your internet usage needs, if for any reason you exceed the 300GB included in your plan in a month, we will automatically add blocks of 50GB to your account for an additional fee of $10 each,” wrote Comcast in an email to their customers.
Those that want to continue to be given unlimited data will have to pay an extra $35 a month. Comcast spokesman Charlie Douglas says that they have made these changes for the sake of “fairness” among customers. However, their customers see this move as the company looking for an excuse to charge a $10 fee.
Many customers are upset that they will have their data usage limited, but part of the outrage comes from how little warning they were given. Comcast gave their customers less than a month’s notice that they will have their internet capped. Had they announced this months ago, those looking for an internet service provider could have considered their options knowing that Comcast would eventually impose a data limit.
Comcast was voted “Worst Company in America” in 2010 and 2014 in the Consumerist’s annual tournament. The company will need to handle the customer service side of this change well, or they may be a top contender for the Consumerist’s 2015 tournament. To help give some wiggle room, Comcast won’t charge the $10 fee for the first three times that a customer goes over their limit.
Comcast will also want to make sure they are effectively warning their customers that they are close to reaching their limit, so they know to cut back usage or risk paying an extra $10. While this limited data plan hasn’t gone nationwide yet, it could be in the near future if it ends up being profitable for the company.
