How to beat anxiety
Everyone has to deal with anxiety. For some, anxiety is a feeling that comes less often and only in minor blows. For others, it can feel like waves crashing down, pushing them into the ground. No matter how severe your anxiety might be, it is important to know how to handle it when anxiety attacks.
Look around. Find 5 things you can see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can smell, and 1 thing you can taste.
This is a common method practiced with those who have anxiety attacks. It is a simple trick that you can do anywhere, no matter what is going on around you. Just close your eyes, take a breath, and start counting. Once you have finished, you will feel significantly calmer and may have even forgotten what is making you panic.
Take a break
If you feel an anxiety attack coming on, move out of the space you are in. Step out of the room, go into the hallway, or walk down the street. Isolating yourself from your triggers will help you calm yourself faster. It will also give you a moment to look around your new surroundings and find something calming in the area.
Get a stress ball
Many people with anxiety carry around stress balls to squeeze, clay to knead, or even baby teething toys to chew on when they get anxiety. Having something tangible in your hands that you can put some form of pressure on can help to relieve some of the stress building up inside of you.
Know who to call
Write down times that your close friends or family are free, so you know who is available and at what time. If you know of specific locations in which your anxiety rises, become close with a few people at that place, so you can talk to them if you can’t get anyone on the phone. Being able to talk through your feelings with those you trust and hearing their voice of reason can greatly ease your anxiety.
Do something relaxing
Find your trick; it could be drawing, reading, writing, playing video games, watching TV, etc. Keep things around that relax you. When you feel an attack coming on or you are overly stressed, work on whatever it is that relaxes you. Your mind will focus in on that one specific thing, you will become distracted from whatever circumstance you’ve just stepped away from, and you will ultimately relax.
Anxiety can be tough to deal with, but when you are equipped with the tools to fight it off you will have an easier time recovering from it and eventually preventing it altogether. Keep yourself together, stay strong, and know that you will make it through.
