The Kenyan woman who photoshopped her way to travel
Seveline Kinya’s story reads like a movie or a cartoon for the social media age. Once upon a time, a girl wanted to visit China so badly that she Photoshopped herself, also badly, into photos of Chinese tourist landmarks and posted them online. While mean spirited people left anonymous comments mocking her, a fairy godfather appeared to make the girl’s dreams come true.

To unpack that, Kinya burst into the notice of Kenyan netizens when she edited photos of herself on a virtual holiday in China. She then shared her photos on social media much to the amusement of those that came across it. Sam Gichuru, CEO of Nailab, the fairy godfather here, caught wind of Seveline’s tenacity and decided to raise funds to help Seveline get to her dream destination. Nailab is one of Kenya’s leading business incubators and works with entrepreneurs and startups. Apparently, Gichuru gave Kinya a job, too.
Kinya is largely mysterious out of her dream to visit China. Why she wanted to go to China isn’t exactly clear. What’s also special about Kinya’s trip to China is that she did not receive the typical tourist welcome. Rather, Kinya had flowers and welcome groups waiting for her at airports and even got to give a talk at a university. Again, details are scarce, but what anyone can see from Kinya’s story is that she really wanted to visit the country.

And thanks to people who believed in her dream, Kinya got to visit China and all the tourist attractions she wanted to see. Now known as Kenya’s “Photoshop girl,” Kinya’s experience has come to show those watching that you can make your dreams a reality no matter how out of reach it may seem. She may have also set a record, being the first person to as her Twitter profile puts it, “photoshop [her] dreams.”
