Mike Huckabee trapped in a public relations nightmare
When running for president, the last thing you want is a public relations disaster — let alone three in a one-month period.
In May, child molestation allegations came to light surrounding “19 Kids and Counting” star, Josh Duggar. Presidential candidate, Mike Huckabee, immediately stood by Duggar and publicly defended him. It was Huckabee’s statement on Facebook that triggered his string of public relation nightmares.
“No purpose whatsoever is served by those who are trying to discredit Josh or his family by sensationalizing the story. Good people make mistakes and do regrettable and even disgusting things,” Huckabee posted on Facebook. Downplaying the child molestation allegations was a damaging public relations move for Huckabee. Now, new molestation allegations have surfaced that may further hurt Huckabee’s image.
On Wednesday, author John Perry was outed by BuzzFeed for being accused of child molestation in two separate lawsuits. Perry has ties to Huckabee, since he has co-written some of the presidential candidate’s books.
Huckabee has yet to comment on the child molestation allegations surrounding his co-author. Huckabee’s response to the allegations may greatly determine the severity of the public backlash.
Another controversial statement that has landed Huckabee in hot water was made at the 2015 National Religious Broadcasters Convention earlier this year. “Now, I wish that someone told me that when I was in high school that I could have felt like a woman when it came time to take showers in PE,” said Huckabee.
Although the statement was made in February, the video was just recently posted on YouTube. Huckabee’s recorded statement surfaced after the Vanity Fair cover showcasing Caitlyn Jenner was revealed to the public. The statement has since created outrage in the LGBT community.
After a series of public relations disasters, Huckabee has a lot of work to do, if he would like to come out on top of the 2016 Republican primaries.
