John Oliver wants to #MakeDonaldDrumpfAgain
The 2016 presidential race has had its heated moments on and off the playing field, as specific candidates battle it out with the media. In last Sunday’s showing of “Last Week Tonight,” host John Oliver focused the subject around presidential candidate, Donald Trump.
Oliver has been particularly hesitant when it comes to giving Trump media time — something most platforms have no problem doing. However, Oliver acknowledged the leads that Trump is currently holding in the polls and made the inevitable known by explaining the legitimate probability of the Republican candidate becoming the nominee for presidency. The declaration Trump made last year when he stated he was running for president was brushed off, mainly due to America’s view of it being seemingly harmless and slightly entertaining. Oliver also expresses the same viewpoint, though he made it apparent that it is not wise to underestimate Trump’s chances at this point in the campaign.
In an attempt to separate the magical tether to success that the Trump name holds, Oliver did a bit of digging around and discovered that an ancestor of Trump actually changed the family surname legally from Drumpf to Trump. This is an especially interesting discovery in light of the fact that Trump has made public jabs at public figures in the past, including comedian and former “Daily Show” host Jon Stewart, for the exact same thing.
Concluding this particular episode, Oliver gave a bold monologue:
“If you are thinking of voting for Donald Trump, the charismatic guy promising to make America great again, stop and take a moment to imagine how you would feel if you just met a guy named Donald Drumpf, a litigious serial liar with a string of broken business ventures and the support of a former Klan leader who he can’t decide whether or not to condemn. Would you think he would make a good president, or is the spell now somewhat broken? That is why tonight I am asking America to make Donald Drumpf again.
The hashtag, #MakeDonaldDrumpfAgain, has been gaining a tremendous amount of popularity across social media, and by visiting DonaldJDrumpf.com, anyone can download a browser extension that replaces Trump’s name with Drumpf.”
“It’s time to stop thinking of the mascot and start thinking of the man,” says Oliver.
