Zakifo festival breaks away from the norm

Zakifo is a live music event that attempts to bring together cultures and people from Africa, the Indian Ocean Islands, Australia, and beyond. It is the sister festival to Sakifo, a similar music festival that takes place on Reunion Island. Launched last year in Durban, South Africa, Zakifo gathers international musicians from across the world on one South African stage. It will be doing this again next month, Zakifo is slated to take place in Durban this May 27 and 28.

As a music festival, Zakifo is unique in that it is diverse not only in terms of the nationality of its line-up but also in terms of gender representation. Music festivals tend to be majority male, in line-ups and behind the scenes. Zakifo turns that over by having women dominate its line-up and also working behind the scenes as part of the production, public relations team and also as content creators. Women are also behind Zakifo’s local organisational team.

It is this no surprise that Zakifo festival is presented as an event that showcases and recognises the talent of women in the music industry. Notable artists and musicians performing at Zakifo this year include: Estére, a one-woman band from New Zealand; Cold Specks from Canada; Maya Kamaty from Reunion Island; and Inna Modja, a Malian singer and model based in France. The line-up is eclectic, and festival goers are certain to enjoy a mix of different musical styles and genres.

More than just musical performances, Zakifo also organises workshops and music industry engagements. Early bird tickets just reached their deadline (April 22) and will give two lucky people an all-expense paid trip to Reunion Island for the Sakifo festival that will take place this June. It is not too late to get tickets though, if you will be in Durban next month.
