Straight back to Compton: Dr. Dre album proceeds to finance Compton arts center

There’s something to be said about remembering where you come from — it’s a central theme of the hip-hop community. Some people falter; they achieve success, and forget their own past. Rap legend Dr. Dre has not forgotten.

Last week, the artist announced that the royalties accrued by his new album, “Compton” — released alongside his new biopic, “Straight Outta Compton” — will go towards the construction of a new performing arts facility for the youth of Compton.

Working with the local government and Mayor Aja Brown, Dre announced the plan on Apple’s “Beats 1” radio show.

He further added:

“I’ve been really trying to do something special for Compton and just couldn’t quite figure out what it was. [Aja Brown] actually had this idea, and she was already in the process of working on it. I said, ‘Boom, this is what we should do.’”

While great PR for the film, the gesture could also have some great benefits for the at risk youth of Compton — a neighborhood generally known for its crime and violence. Getting kids involved in the arts at a young age can go a long way towards channelling their passion and creativity into something productive, rather than putting them out on the streets with no outlet. Dr. Dre himself has a history of looking towards future generations; he discovered Eminem — one if this generation’s rap icons — back in the 1990’s.

The album itself will feature 16 tracks recorded by numerous rap legends from various eras and geographic regions, including: Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, and Ice Cube (another central figure in the film).

“Compton” went up for sale online last Friday, and the film “Straight Outta Compton” will hit theaters this Friday, August 14.
