2014 marks the 20th year anniversary of Nas’ “Illmatic” album. Since the release of Illmatic in 1994, Nas has released eight consecutive platinum and multi-platinum albums, and has sold over 25 million albums worldwide.  Hailed as one of the greatest rappers of all time, and still a major influence to rappers and listeners today, the festival will celebrate Nas’ many achievements in the past 20 years.

In an interview with NPR, Nas reflected on the years before and after the release of “Illmatic”. When asked what it is like to be on stage and performing his old songs he replied, “Because it’s 20 years, it’s a party. So you saw me partying. It’s a real celebratory mood. I’m in that space: I crack a bottle of Henny on the stage and take it to the neck and I feel life. It’s a feeling I can’t explain. Yeah, it’s a party. I’m having a party.”

Nas will be performing alongside some of hip-hops newest artists; this will present an interesting contrast between hip-hop legends and those who are new to the game. It will also be a way to highlight how his music has transcended the years and still proves to be influential. The festival will also be a way for newer artists to solidify their name and status as influential rap artists.

The festival is sure to be full of good vibes and great music, celebrating both the past, present, and future of rap music and culture. Be sure to check out Nas and other great artists this weekend at Hot 97s Summer Jam.
